The Session is a monthly event for the beer blogging community which was started by Stan Hieronymus at Appellation Beer. On the first Friday of each month, all participating bloggers write about a predetermined topic. Each month a different blog is chosen to host The Session, choose the topic, and post a roundup of all the responses received. For more info on The Session, check out the Brookston Beer Bulletin’s archive page.
The Roaming Pint is happy and excited to host our first session of…The Session. Since travel is such an important part of our lives I wanted our topic to focus on beer travel. In Session #29, Beer by Bart asked writers to tell him about their favorite beer trips to which he got some great responses of personal favorites and general tips for certain cities.
So as not to tread over old ground my question is going to focus on the “why” more than the “what”. So I ask you fellow bloggers and beer lovers, why is it important for us to visit the place the where our beers are made? Why does drinking from source always seem like a better and more valuable experience? Is it simply a matter of getting the beer at it’s freshest or is it more akin to pilgrimage to pay respect and understand the circumstances of the beer better?
To participate in this Session, write a response to one or more of the questions above and then post a link to the article in the comments section below on or before November 7th. Then come back later to read my round up of all great perspectives on the issue of why we travel for beer.
My main motivation to visit the places where my favorite beers are made is because of the experience. I do enjoy the tasting part too. You can try beers that don’t get distributed in your area.
The people I meet at breweries when I go on Brewery Bike Tours are the best part. I sit down at the bar and meet locals or travelers and they are what makes the brewery experience rich. It is the atmosphere that helps you understand why the beer is made how it is and the history of the brewery. One of the coolest breweries I visited was Anchor Steam because of their unique history in creating the California Common style.
I love it when the personality of the establishment comes through. My hometown brewery defines my home. You get to know the people who work there and make the beer you enjoy. They let you in on little secrets or give you a sneak taste. The breweries in Milwaukee each have their own style and each is worth visiting because of their quirks.
Great topic! Here’s my post:

[…] Ohboy has it been awhile since I’ve partaken in The Session (July, 2013 #73 to be specific), but I have a new blog and a new take on beer travel, both as a result of just having lived in Europe for a year as well as having a beer travel guidebook coming out in 3 weeks. Fittingly for this edition of the monthly beer blogging Session, Maria and Brian Devine over at the Roaming Pint ask: […]
D’oh, I started to write this on Friday the 7th, then the next Friday rolled around and I remembered to finish it. It’s the posting here part I’d forgotten til now. The fact that there’s no round-up yet gives me hope I’m not too late. Without further a brew: http://brianyaeger.com/2014/11/14/the-session-93-why-travel/
You guessed correctly. I am currently working on the round up.
