Earth Bread + Brewery
TRP post courtesy of our East Coast Affiliate, Nick:
Earth Bread + Brewery is a brewpub in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia. Mt. Airy is a small neighborhood in the northwest section of the city. It isn’t one of the more well known sections of Philadelphia, but the main street, Germantown Avenue, has about 5 blocks of shops and some pretty good restaurants and bars. The fact that it has a great brewpub of its own should be a good enough reason to give it a chance.
Earth Bread is a good place to go for dinner especially to get their signature flatbreads. Throw in the fact that it has four or five house brews on tap on any night, as well as at least that many selections from microbrews, and it’s a perfect option for a relaxed dinner. You can watch the flatbreads being made in front of you and baked in their brick oven, which from pictures on their website, looks like it was built by the owner/brewer.
Their selections change constantly but in early October they were serving a few German style beers as well as their porter and a sour wheat. We gave the sour wheat a try and at the direction of the waitress had them add cherry flavoring to the beer. Apparently it was supposed to give the sour flavors a little more balance. Not my favorite drink of all time, but the effort to put together not only a beer but a beer experience was duly noted. The porter on the other hand was right up my alley.
Since opening in 2006 they have built up a strong local following by serving great food and beer while trying to support sustainability and local agriculture. They do a lot to try to keep their waste to a minimum, such as wrapping your to-go food in aluminum foil rather than plastic boxes or bags. And you’ll definitely want to-go food; the flatbread makes for great lake night snack. If only they could send you home with a few of their beers wrapped in aluminum foil.
