TRP visited Grey Sail Brewing Co in July of 2012. We had picked up a six pack of their Flagship Ale upon entering Rhode Island and we instantly fell in love with this crisp summer beer. With it located in Westerly Grey Sail is right on the border of Rhode Island and Connecticut we figured we had to stop by get some from the source.

The husband and wife team of Alan (home brewer) and Jennifer Brinton (entrepreneur) opened Grey Sail late in 2011 with the idea of creating a family business that their children could one day take over, if they so desired. The brewery is very family centric from the mural behind the tasting bar (all family members are depicted) to the names of their two current canned beers. Grey Sail comes from Grace Ale (their daughter’s name) and the Flying Jenny (wife) Extra Pale Ale. Their daughter was even running a lemonade stand when we showed up for the brewery tour.

Currently they only offer these two options in cans, but are working on a system to can their seasonals that are currently only available in kegs. When we visited they had a distribution radius of about 100 miles, but should be able to expand that as the word spreads of the great craft beer being produced in Westerly.

Currently Grey Sail is only open on Saturday’s for tours and tastings from 1 to 5 pm so make sure to plan accordingly when making a visit. They offer free 3 oz samples or you can purchase a Grey Sail pint glass for $5 and get full size pours.

TRP visited Brau Brothers in June of 2011. Located in the heavily populated town of Lucan (pronounced Lou-CAN, population 220) you will find this little gem of a brewery. The actual brewery is separate from the Brauhaus downtown, although not far, it is just around the block in a large barn. They have 6 taps [...]
