Yards Brewing Company
TRP post courtesy of our East Coast Affiliate, Nick:
Yards Brewery is located close to the Delaware River slightly Northeast of Center City Philadelphia.
However, if history is a predictor of things to come, they may not be there all that long. Consistently increasing demand has forced them to re-locate three times, so they have brewed at four different locations since their 1995 commercial debut. You can read more about their history on their website. http://www.yardsbrewing.com/about.asp
I’ve been on the tour twice at their current location. The building is pretty cool. It was previously used as an indoor skate park, and they decided to leave a bunch of the skateboarding murals on the walls. And it seems like they have plenty of room to grow their production if need be. So they will most likely still be in the same location for a good while. They have a great bar/hang out area with a pool table and shuffleboard and a good sized U-shaped bar. It gets pretty crowded in there on weekends.
Yards brews English style beers and they throw plenty of their own style into everything. I’ve had every beer that Yards sells on a regular basis, and my go-to’s are the Brawler, the Philly Pale, and the Love Stout.
The Brawler is an easy drinking beer, but you’d never figure that out just by looking at it. It’s a dark colored, malty beer, but it’s 4.2% ABV so it goes down smooth.
The Philly Pale has steadily become my favorite because it’s very refreshing and crisp. Great in the summer, but well rounded enough that you can drink it all year round.
Lastly, if you catch the Love Stout on draft at one of the many bars in Philly that carries it, get it. It’s one of the most flavorful, creamiest stouts I’ve tried.
