This week Maria and I had the honor of being featured on New Brew Thursday‘s weekly video segment. For those unfamiliar with the show you should check it out. Each week the crew of Stephen Johnson, John Holzer, and Matt Becker introduce and review a new beer and have a beer and food paring segment with renowned cicerone Dr. Bill Sysak. We met Stephen this summer at the Nebraska Beer Fest and had stayed in touch throughout our travels. Luckily we were able to meet up again in Cali for the limited release of Knuckle Sandwich (Double IPA) from Bootlegger’s Brewery. When he asked if we would do a segment on their show Maria’s first question was “Can we do Free State beer?”
Stephen assured us we could and it was on. Thanks to Steve Bradt, Free State Brew Master, we were able to get a 6-pack of one my favorite all-time beers, Oatmeal Stout, overnighted to us. We planned to film on Friday as we were going to be in LA Thursday to watch our beloved Jayhawks play USC. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
The next day we headed out to Perris, CA to meet up with Stephen where he assured us we could park the RV overnight. We were less assured when he told us his car was broken into for the second time earlier in the week. We are happy to report there were no incidences, turns out we might have good guard dogs afterall!
The actual process of filming a NBT segment involves drinking cellared beers for an hour or so, shooting the episode and drinking for the rest of the night. Beers were shared and jokes were cracked. You can watch the results here: Oatmeal Stout: Free State Brewing with The Roaming Pint
Thanks to NBT for inviting us to share our love of Free State with you. Would love to bring more tasty brews to you from the midwest and work on Stephen’s dislike for going back there! 🙂
